What is a Ranch Style House?
Ranch style homes can be defined as a single-story residence that has become increasingly popular over the past few years. It is often recognized by its single-floor design, rectangular or L-shaped exterior, and a somewhat low roof. This style of housing can be found anywhere, from cities to rural settings.
History
Beginning with the history of the ranch-style housing, often referred to as ‘California’ or ‘western’ ranch, early houses built with this style in mind can be traced back to the beginning of the 19th century. It developed in the United States, and became popular in the 1940/50’s.
As westward expansion took place in the newly developed country, travelling settlers began to build homes using available materials, many of which included logs, stones, and mud. It was dubbed “log cabin” or “adobe” style for many years. The design advanced as Californian builders incorporated Spanish colonial and Mediterranean Revival techniques into each home, such as clay roofs, stucco exteriors, and arched windows to name a few.
As World War II emerged, the popularity of the ranch home skyrocketed. Its affordability, easy construction, and adequate living space attracted many families. As technology advanced, new elements were incorporated into the construction. Larger windows, sliding glass doors, garages, and more were added to modernize the look of both the exterior and the interior.
Today, ranch-style homes continue to keep its name as one of the most popular housing styles in the United States. While modern features are sometimes preferred, many buyers enjoy the look and feel of the original style.
What Makes This Style So Popular?
Due to the affordability and convenience of Ranch-Style homes, this construction style has maintained popularity throughout its existence. They are easy to construct, making them a budget-friendly option, as well as being considerably simple to maintain. In addition, because they are only one story buildings, houses built in the ranch style are very energy efficient. Open floor plans are also a plus, as they allow a large range of flexibility for room layout.
Exterior vs. Interior
One of the most identifiable features of the ranch-style home is their low-pitched roofs that allow an increase of natural sunlight indoors. The exterior often has simple elements to it, with brick and siding being the most popular building techniques, though some people request a stucco exterior because of its low maintenance requirements. Multiple windows, outdoor living areas, and garages are some of the other common features.
The inside of the house is very open, with minimal walls and an open floor plan, creating a connected environment. Kitchens usually lay in the middle of the house and are connected to the rooms around it. Archways or hallways are used to connect rooms to other rooms while still maintaining a spacious living area.
Ideality
Those in search of a simple and affordable living area tend to gravitate towards the ranch style. While they may not seem as luxurious as a two or three story home, they are just as comfortable and are sure to provide a sense of comfort to and everyone within it.
