Lake Cumberland, Kentucky

Covering over 65,000 acres with 1,200 miles of shoreline, Lake Cumberland is a popular place for tourist visits. It is located in southern Kentucky and remains one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. The lake was created in the 1950s after dams were incorporated into the Cumberland River for hydroelectric power and as a solution to flooding. Aside from its natural beauty, there are also many activities that are offered by the lake.

History

As the dams on the Cumberland River were in the process of being constructed, Lake Cumberland was created. The process took almost 10 years to complete, and was officially open to the public by 1952.

Since its been open to the public, the lake has become increasingly popular for many years now. Boaters, fishers, campers, and hikers travel from all over America to visit the famous lake. Many events and festivals are also hosted at the lake, including teh Lake Cumberland Raft-Up – one of the largest boat events in the United States.
