This wonderful lake is nothing small. Covering about 8,210 acres, it spans across Taylor, Adair, and Casey counties, making it one of the largest lakes in the state of Kentucky. Formed by Green River, this body of water is surrounded by a plethora of nature scenes. From forests to hills, you will never be disappointed by the surrounding view.

Such diverse nature always has wildlife that lives within it. The Eastern Box Turtle and the Great Blue Heron are two of the top wildlife attractions. History & Conservation

In recent centuries, the area surrounding the lake was inhabited by various Native American tribes. They relied on natural resources for food and materials. Europeans soon arrived in the area, using the fertile land surrounding Green River to grow produce.

Around 1970, the construction of Green River Lake was completed. Tourism and outdoor recreated skyrocketed in the area. Soon, traditions revolving around fishing, boating, and water sports were soon formed, and are still held today.

This increase in visitors raised awareness for environmental conservation. Clean-up projects, educational programs, and nature preservation projects have all taken place in order to protect Green River lake and the area around it.

Events

Many locals as well as tourists enjoy the annual fishing and boating tournaments, as well as festivals, fairs, and music events. Fourth of July celebrations are also a favorite among locals. Fireworks are set off, reflecting off of the lake. Games, picnics, and other activities are held, providing further entertainment.

Guided hikes, bird watching tours, and much more are also some of the more nature involved events. Heritage fairs and craft shows are also held in order to support local artists.
