History
A group of pioneers led by Major John Crockett founded the town of Burkesville in 1798. They named the town after Isham Burk, a landowner who donated land for the site. The town also played a role in the Civil War. They ended up getting caught in a conflict between the Union and Confederate militaries, and switched sides of support many times. Many of its buildings have been preserved to this day, creating many historic landmarks.
